<p style="margin-top: 10px; text-align: justify; line-height: 24px;"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The first regional competition of IEEE Empower a Billion Lives (EBL), Delta Cup - EBL Pacific Asia Final Round was successfully held in Shenzhen, China during Nov. 4-6, 2018.</span></p><p style="margin-top:10px;line-height: 24px"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Steering Committee Chair and President of China Power Supply Prof. Dehong Xu from Zhejiang University, President-elect of IEEE PELS Prof. Frede Blaabjerg from Aalborg University, Judging Committee Chair Prof. Phil T. Krein from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Organizing Committee Chair Prof. Tianhao Tang from Shanghai Maritime University, Dr. Alpha Zhang from Title sponsor Delta Electronics, 7 expert judges and 10 qualified teams attended EBL Pacific Asia final round.</span></p><p style="margin-top:10px;line-height: 24px"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">IEEE Empower a Billion Lives (EBL) which is held by IEEE-Power Electronics Society (PELS) is a biennial global competition aimed at fostering innovation to develop solutions to electricity access for 3 billons people in the world living in energy poverty. It includes 5 regional competitions – Pacific Asia, Americas, Europe, Africa, and South Asia. Delta Cup – EBL Pacific Asia is co-organized by IEEE Power Electronics and China Power Supply Society (CPSS) and title sponsored by Delta Electronics Inc.</span></p><p style="margin-top:10px;line-height: 24px"><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Online round of EBL Pacific Asia started from April, 43 teams from 10 countries and regions submit proposals for 4 tracks. Track1 is Decentralized Model which means ability to serve single homes, Track2 is Centralized Utility Model which refers to centrally planned and implemented power generation and distribution model. Both of these 2 tracks include 2 subtracks – A. Commercially available solutions and B. Emerging solutions. A panel of judges reviewed the proposed energy access solutions with the key elements on the physical, technical, social and business. 10 qualified teams are selected for the regional final round.</span></p><p style="margin-top:10px;line-height: 24px"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The final round started with a Judging Panel Session on Nov. 4. Similarly, to the show “Shark Tank”, each team got 15 minutes to pitch their idea live to the judging panel and answered the challenging questions from the judges (Figure 1 and Figure 2). Following the Judging Panel Session, there is the Tech Demo Session lasting for 2 hours. This is an optional session for the teams that have a solution can be demonstrated onsite. 5 teams participated in and showed their devices, business systems and communication technologies to the judges in separate rooms (Figure 3). Judging panel did not evaluate the proposed solutions just by the innovation of the technology, but also took into account the financial model, economic viability, ease-of-use, significant value for target family and community (Figure 5). ‘Judges saw some really interesting innovation as well as business models and social interaction from some teams.’ the judging committee chair Prof. Krein said. More than 800 attendees witnessed this glorious event. Organizing Committee Chair Prof. Tianhao Tang chaired the ceremony. PELS President-elect Prof. Frede Blaabjerg gave an exciting speech with his congratulations to the teams and announced that all the winning teams from Pacific Asia would be recommended to EBL Global Final which will be held in September 2019 in USA. Figure 6 shows Prof. Dehong Xu and Prof. Frede Blaabjerg granted to the Grand Award winner. Prof. Philip T. Delta Electronics provided the rewards, travel fund and related expenditure for the competition. Figure 7 shows the Steering Committee Chair Prof. Dehong Xu granted the sponsor medal to Delta Electronics for their great contribution. CPSS as the host of EBL Pacific Asia did a wonderful work in preparation and organization.
